I am surprised to learn about research that links diabetes and Alzheimer’s.  The basis of this connection is some evidence which shows that spikes in blood sugar contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. Further, that dementia (Alzheimer’s being the most common form) could be considered a form of diabetes that selectively targets the brain. (Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Oct 2013)

The idea that sugar levels and dementia were linked started out when researchers noticed that individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes had a higher risk for dementia than non-diabetics.  Isn’t it fascinating how different connections and looking at findings from different angles Diabetes picturethat spark new treatment approaches?

In another study, researchers followed over 1,200 individuals with diabetes over a 12 year period.  They found a decline in memory, attention and other cognitive skills four times larger than persons without diabetes.  (Diabetes Care, Jun 2013).  Research continues to explore how this is happening.

Observing behavioural changes often leads research initiatives.

See it happen and wonder why…
