Brain training is all the rage these days. I do it myself; I play online games that I believe will exercise my brain cells.
Why do I believe I am losing bits and pieces of my memory – because I cannot find my cell phone or my keys. And yet, that’s usually because I didn’t put them back in their regular spot. I also feel frustrated when I can’t remember a name or detail, it usually means I need to slow down for a moment and give my brain a chance to work, rather than pressure it to retrieve it now!!
A recent article by Linda Kelsey in The Telegraph, notes that in a randomised trial of nearly 7,000 adults over 50, by researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London found that online games can have memory benefits. And for the over 50 crowd, too much time spent with screens is destroying our attention span and when we need to remember facts, we can always check back on Google.
For all of us, me included, the best way to live with our ageing brains is to look after your body:
- exercise,
- good food,
- keep your mind engaged and
- socialize with others.
How are you doing on these four fronts?
